Shaw Method Swimming
I love the water, I first ventured off on my own (tadpole style) at the age of 2 and spent most of my childhood in the swimming pool. Growing up in Thailand made this extra appealing and I spent most of my days messing around in the pool with friends and competing for my club and school.
After moving to the UK for university and work, I swam less and less (swimming indoors wasn’t quite so appealing!). However I missed the water and coming back to it as an adult, I felt frustrated with my technique, often finding that I was quite achy in the shoulders after a long swim.
In 2012, searching for some good advice, I came across the Shaw Method and Steven Shaw. I had one lesson with him and was instantly hooked on the technique, so much so that I decided to train as a teacher. Having always felt a fish out of water in office life, I took the plunge in 2013 and left my career as a chartered accountant to set up Purely Swimming.
It’s been an absolute pleasure helping so many people learn to swim or improve their strokes. The biggest reward is simply watching people delight in water, either for the first time, or once again.
Learning more about the body and the importance of alignment through swimming and the Shaw Method, I began to take Pilates classes. I was really struck by how much Pilates improved my swimming and how it also helped to finally address all the postural issues I’d built up through years of office life and desk work.
Keen to explore this much further, I decided to undertake the teacher training with Body Arts and Science International, a leading Pilates education academy. I firstly qualified in mat work then progressed to complete the Comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training course (using the full complement of Pilates equipment).
I’m now combining this with my swimming teaching and taking huge enjoyment in spreading the benefits of both.
I offer Zoom mat classes and studio (equipment) based classes at my home studio in Woking, Surrey.
